R2B

The R2B TechNet Workshop was created and is administered by AFMNet to specifically assist AFMNet grantees and their HQP across Canada to accelerate the commercialization of their scientific discoveries.

The mission is "To aid & encourage commercialization of Canadian science by providing access to fundamental commercialization tools and modern business methods to AFMNet researchers and to the broader research community."

Workshop Presenters/Presentations:

Murray McLaughlin, PhD: Understanding value creation of new ideas, technology commercialization strategies to meet the "business–pull" including licensing, joint ventures, start–up companies.

Jeffrey Turner, PhD: "professor to entrepreneur" transition mechanics and emotions from real life experience; turning scientific ideas into value & proven technology; encouragement and understanding of a sharpening focus on tech. com. by Funding Agencies and government accountability groups.

Dana Rath, LLD, CA: the legal/financial aspects of technology commercialization including: basic "need–to–know" tools e.g., CDA, BMTA; legal aspects of starting a small business in Canada and leveraging start–up funds e.g., SRED tax credits.

Lorelei Graham, Canadian Patent Lawyer : Intellectual Property development is a critical cornerstone for any commercialization route i.e., licensing or start–up company. Avoiding the pitfalls of disclosure, facilitating patent development and prosecution, evaluation of patent competitive landscape.

Host University Technology Com./UILO Officer: your on–site partner with expertise to assist with any of your technology commercialization questions & processes.

Workshop Agenda

Morning General Session (8:30 a.m. – noon) included 5 formal presentations to all attendees in a general session. Each presentation lasted 30 minutes with 10 minutes allocated for questions.

Turner – "Commercialization of technology: Challenges and Opportunities of Converting Science to Technology" McLaughlin – "Market Pull: Attracting & Retaining Investor Interest and Funding for Your Technology or Company" Graham – "Protection & Value Creation Through Patenting Technology" Rath – "Legal and Financial Toolbox for Technology Commercialization" Host UILO Office: local expertise and methods

Afternoon Break–out Sessions (1:30–5 p.m.) involved an opportunity for NIs & HQP to interact in small groups with presenters to ask more involved questions, seek advice or share experiences with a motive to further drill down on specific points of interest to attendees.

The break–out session also began a dialogue between researchers and AFMNet concerning various aspects of technology commercialization. The advancement of a working relationship between researchers and AFMNet is the foundation of AFMNet's commercialization effort.
