Network's vision

The Advanced Foods and Materials Network (AFMNet) will advance our understanding of food and bio-material functionality by following a research continuum that begins with a fundamental understanding of the structure-function of bio-molecules to determine how they affect structure, texture, chemistry, esthetics, nutrition and safety, and how these properties may impact on consumer and citizen issues (e.g., regulation, policy, risk assessment, management). The approach will be synergistic and multidisciplinary with a common theme of structure-function for which excellence of research is the primary consideration. It will bring together a diverse but complementary group of researchers from the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities and law, many who have not traditionally interacted. More importantly, it will identify gaps in existing research personnel and capacity, and allow training of highly qualified personnel to become the leaders of tomorrow in industry, academia and government.

Importance of HQP

The network aims to create the next generation of multidisciplinary scientists by supporting and enhancing opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctorate fellows and research associates. HQP are the foundation on which this network is built, and their success is tied to our ability to make learning an exciting and challenging endeavor, with a high probability of a rewarding career. AFMNet is committed to increasing the value and marketability of HQP by providing multidisciplinary, multi-sectoral training that facilitates HQP interactions with university, government and industrial laboratories. To promote opportunity and interaction for HQP within the network, and to meet their changing needs, AFMNet has sanctioned the formation of a HQP-driven association.

HQP Association (HQPA)

All HQP within the network, past and present, are considered vital members of the HQPA. The association's mandate is to enhance the visibility, opportunity and research excellence of HQP, by promoting networking, offering skills and development training and facilitating the formation of HQP-industry partnerships. The association is headed by an elected governing council, made up of HQP from all three themes, of different levels of education and languages. The success of the network and the association depends on the involvement of the HQP body.
