Rickey Yada

Dr. Rickey Yada received his PhD from the Department of Food Science at the University of British Columbia in 1984. He has served as Chair of the Department of Food Science and as the Assistant Vice President Research, Agri-Food Programs, both at the University of Guelph. He is presently a Professor in the Department of Food Science, a Canada Research Chair in Food Protein Structure, and the Scientific Director of the Advanced Foods and Materials Network, Networks of Centres of Excellence. He has participated on numerous research awards panels and committees, both at the national and international levels. Among other activities, he, currently, chairs the Scientific Council, International Union of Food Science and Technology, is the North American Editor for Trends in Food Science and Technology and is on editorial boards for several journals. He is the author of over 150 refereed journal publications and several book chapters. Dr. Yada is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology and of the International Academy, International Union of Food Science and Technology.

Allan Paulson

Dr. Allan Paulson is a Professor of Food Science at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Associate Scientific Director of the Advanced Foods and Materials Network of Centres of Excellence (AFMNet). Dr. Paulson has worked in food research for more than 25 years, specializing in food chemistry, processing and packaging. His research has included work with gels, emulsions and foams for delivery of bioactive molecules and probiotics, developing biodegradable/edible packaging material and microencapsulation matrices, investigating thermal processing of foods in different container types and retort systems, and improving antimicrobial peptides for food use. Dr. Paulson has been active with Canada’s Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council for adjudicating research grants, is on the College of Reviewers for the Canada Research Chairs Program, and he received the WJ Eva Award from the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology for contributions and service. He is a consultant to the food industry through the Canadian Institute of Fisheries Technology, a contract Research and Development centre for commercial utilization of food and marine resources, and chaired the publishing committee of the Food Research International scientific journal.

Perry Lidster

Dr. Perry Lidster joined AFMNet in December 2009 as the Managing Director. Dr. Lidster brings to AFMNet experience in science, technology commercialization and business development. He has extensive experience in operational management of government, public and private funded industry organizations. Some of his key strengths include management of human resources, facilities and finances, delivery of research programs, leadership in developing novel industry/government alliances and the development of small and medium size enterprises.

In his role as Managing Director, Dr. Lidster is responsible for the overall management of the operational and administrative staff and activities of the Network. Included in these responsibilities are the implementation of proper governance and board reporting, management of financial arrangements with the host University of Guelph and ensuring compliance with NCE Directives. He is also responsible for developing and managing commercialization initiatives and the industry client base.

Dr. Lidster received his education from the University of British Columbia in the departments of Biochemistry, Plant Science and Food Science. His scientific credentials include 50 refereed scientific publications, 6 patents and 154 technical publications.

Prior to joining AFMNet, Perry has held senior management positions as President and CEO Innovative Food Systems Corp., President and CEO, Ag-West Bio Inc., President and Chief Operating Officer of FreshXtend Technologies Corp. and Director, Lacombe/Beaverlodge Research Centre (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada).

Michael DiPaul joined AFMNet in June of 2011 as Project Management and Business Development Officer. He holds his a Bachelor of Commerce (Co-op) degree, specializing in marketing management, and is interested in commercialization of new technologies.

Michael brings a creative flair, hard-working attitude, and good sense of humour to all of his work and always gets the job done.

Charity Parr-Vasquez
Project Outcomes Manager
Dr. Charity Parr-Vasquez is the Project Outcomes Manager at the Advanced Foods and Materials Network (AFMNet), a position she started on October 1st, 2010. In her role as Project Outcomes Manager, Charity is responsible for the management of the Network’s Innovative Research Program. Reporting to Dr. Yada, Charity monitors all currently AFMNet funded Innovative projects on an ongoing basis for scientific, budgetary and HQP progress. She also is working closely with the Dr. Lidster, Managing Director and Tom Dowler, Business Development Officer, to develop and implement methodologies for evaluation of return on investment. Charity also works closely with AFMNet I.T. Manager, Phil Guinchard, to ensure the accuracy of information collected from all participants of the Network and to guarantee timely and effective collection of data, as per the requirements of the NCE.

In her role as Project Outcomes Manager Charity also works with the Scientific and Associate Scientific Directors to manage AFMNet’s International Food Research Collaboration (IFRC) and International Society of Food Applications of Nanoscale Science (ISFANS).

Charity received her B.Sc., Honours Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Ph.D., Food Science, from the University of Guelph.

Monique Poirier
Executive Assistant Governance
Executive Assistant Governance

Monique Poirier is the Executive Assistant with responsibilities associated with Governance of the Network.

In her current role she maintains and updates the governance framework, monitors compliance, coordinates meetings for the Board of Directors, Research Management Committee, Executive Committee and International Scientific Advisory Committee, has established and maintains the Operations Manual of the Network.

She is the Recording Secretary to the Board and committees and facilitates the flow of information while maintaining a critical level of confidentiality, professionalism and ethics in providing key information to managers, board members and committee members.

Jan Smith
Network Operations/Financial Manager

Jan Smith joined Advanced Foods and Materials Network (AFMNet) in June 2005 as Financial Manager and accepted additional responsibilities as Operations Manager in 2007. Jan brings with her a broad range of experience in both not for profit and industry with controllership and management roles in both areas.

In her role as Financial Manager, Jan is responsible for the overall financial activities of the Network ensuring that annual budgets are prepared, grant and other payments are made on a timely basis and that budgetary and NCE guidelines are adhered to in all transactions. Jan also liaises with the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors advising the committee on a quarterly basis of the current activity of the Network and also advising the committee on future plans related to the financial status and cash flow of the Network. Jan also provides monthly Financial Statements to the Board Chair, Senior Management and our Host University (University of Guelph). She also liaises with auditors, banks and government agencies on behalf of the Network.

As Operations Manager Jan covers a number of areas including Human Resources, governance and liaison with the Board of Directors and Committees of the Board including scheduling of Board and Committee meetings. She also assists and advises Network personnel with activities including the Annual Scientific Conference, HQP Professional Development School and various other meetings, conferences and network activities.

Jan received her education at Loyalist College, the University of Waterloo and the Certified General Accountants - Canada
