AFMNet's 6th Annual Scientific Conference
The Advanced Foods and Materials Network (AFMNet) hosted its Sixth Annual Scientific Conference in Halifax - Wednesday, May 26 to Saturday, May 29 2010 and we are happy to report that it was a great success!
- Conference registration reached 177 attendees for 2010.
- The 4-day event included presentations of all 19 AFMNet Projects, showcased research via 50 poster competition entries, incorporated a super fun geo-caching adventure throughout downtown Halifax and provided lots of time for networking and knowledge exchange.
- The conference also generated lots of great press coverage - the event and highlighted research has received national coverage in 5 daily newspapers (e.g., Hamilton Spectator, London Free Press); 29 on-line media sites (e.g., Canoe.ca, CBC.ca), 3 Television Programs (A-Television and Rogers TV, London and CTV, Southwestern Ontario) and 1 radio program (CBC-Radio, Halifax).
- We also secured the most sponsorship dollars ever, with support from Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions Corporation; General Mills; Canadian Medical Association; Taiyo Kagaku Co., Ltd.; Ocean Nutrition Canada; BioEnterprise Inc.; Syngenta; BIOTECanada; and FoodTech Canada!

Some Testemonials from this year's event:
The Geo-caching Team Building Event was awesome! The team building events gets better every year!! It was a great opportunity to meet new people.
- Chibuike Udenigwe, HQP
Great conference! The opportunity to interact with fellow scientists, HQP and industry is one of the key strengths of the ASC. I look forward to attending the 2011 conference.
- Rotimi Aluko, Researcher
The hopper tour, geo-caching and harbour dinner cruise were wonderful in familiarizing the members with the beautiful city of Halifax. I was initially worried that I may not be able to see the city as the conference schedule seemed a bit tight, but these events were more than expected and I gained a lot of interesting information about the city. The geo-caching team building event provided an opportunity for the quieter members (like me!) to network within our smaller groups. I personally thought it was a great idea!
- Kimmie Fung, HQP
This was a very well organized and conducted scientific conference. The atmosphere was very positive and friendly, the science was excellent as were the presentations and the time allotted. The HQP posters were excellent and all presenters were professional in conducting their presentations. The entertainment for dinners enabled optimal networking opportunities which were particularly important from both the scientific and commercialization aspects. All in all, the organization team of AFMnet, should be congratulated on an excellent conference.
- David Kitts, Researcher
As a social scientist, I was much like Bill Carr reading posters, etc. -- "The . . ." and then I was lost. Nonetheless, I found this to be an amazing conference and organization, really my first introduction to AFMNet. I was impressed by pretty well everything, the organization, the people, and activities that seemed to allow everyone to feel included, even those of us who really did not understand the nuts and bolts of all the research. Thanks for a great conference!
- Steven Dukeshire, Researcher
Great opportunity to reunite with friends and colleagues and also form partnerships with other scientists. This conference provides HQP the opportunity to share and develop ideas for new areas of research, establish local and international collaborations, and embrace the need for Canadian innovation and commercialization.
