AFMNet's 5th Annual Scientific Conference

The Advanced Foods and Materials Network (AFMNet) hosted its Fifth Annual Scientific Conference in Guelph - Thursday, June 11 to Sunday, June 14th 2009 and we are happy to report that it was a great success!

  • Conference registration reached 170 attendees for 2009, with an additional 20 industry/community attendees for Saturday night's Gala Dinner, with guest speaker Verna J. Kirkness.
  • The 4-day event included presentations of all 18 AFMNet Projects, showcased research via 44 poster competition entries, incorporated a fun dragon boat racing event on Guelph Lake and provided lots of time for networking and knowledge exchange.
  • The conference also generated a great deal of press coverage - to date the event and highlighted research has received national coverage in 10 daily newspapers (e.g., Guelph Mercury, Hamilton Spectator, Globe and Mail and Toronto Star); 18 on-line media sites (e.g., Bakers Journal.com, Exchange Magazine.com, Halifax Chronicle Herald Online, London Free Press Online), 2 Television Programs (Rogers TV, Guelph and Shaw TV, Winnipeg) and 2 radio programs (CBC-Radio, French and Wave 94.7, Hamilton).
  • We also secured important sponsorship support from General Mills; Canadian Medical Association; Taiyo Kagaku Co., Ltd.; Government of Alberta; BioEnterprise Inc.; Soy 20/20 and FoodTech Canada, proving confidence in and the strengthening of our industry partnerships.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended the event - your presentations, ideas, enthusiasm and knowledge made for a very successful and interesting 4 days! We look forward to seeing everyone in Halifax, May 27-30, 2010 for our 6th Annual Scientific Conference.
