Alkaline Water a Mixed Bag, But Mostly Bad

Neutral water has a pH value of 7, while acidic water has a pH value of less than 7. Alkaline water, on the other hand, has a pH of more than 7. There have been claims and counterclaims about the benefits of drinking alkaline water, but today, it’s time to lay bare all the facts – good or bad.

Alkaline water may promote bone health, or not

In a study contrasting alkaline water with acidic water, it was found that alkaline water caused less bone resorption. This is the process by which bone cells are replaced by new ones. Science has shown that when this process is slowed down, individuals have better bone health.

Therefore, this suggests that alkaline water might promote bone health. The only problem was that the study was based on only 30 women, which is a small number of people. Acidic water was also shown to lower bone resorption, just not at a rate that was as good as that linked to alkaline water.

In another study, this time involving an alkaline diet rather than alkaline water, it was concluded that alkaline food does nothing to improve bone health. The study focused on finding out if alkaline diet could cause a reduction in osteoporosis. The study also discounted claims that acidic water caused osteoporosis, a claim that was being regularly made by commercial outfits benefiting from alkaline water products.

Alkaline responsible for a host of health problems, does not treat cancer

Another group of experts set out to review evidence to see if alkaline water truly promoted health, especially claims that it may help people with cancer. But what they found, instead, was that alkaline water caused a number of problems, and no evidence that it could result in better health.

Some of the harmful effects linked to alkaline water in this review included heart problems, poisonous reactions, a restricted release of stomach acids, and a reduced rate at which the gall bladder was emptied. Therefore, the claims made by people trying to profit from the sale of water alkalinizers have no basis, and the team behind this review could not find any evidence to support their claim that alkaline had cancer curing abilities.

No, alkaline water does not prevent acid reflux

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents rise and reach the food pipe. A study has proposed that alkaline water might aid in the problem, but its recommendation was that further research was needed, in part because the study was never done on humans. But the results did suggest that alkaline water with a pH of 8.8 could help prevent stomach acidity.

Alkaline Water and Weight Loss

A 2011 study reported that obese individuals who consumed 2 litters of electrolyzed water daily lost 12 pounds in two months. The study never made it to a peer review journal so I wouldn’t trust it. For weight loss I recommend Nutrisystem because it has worked for more than a million people the past 40 years.

So, there you have it. Alkaline water is not worth most of the hype. But if you are dealing with acid reflux, it might offer relief for your condition. Otherwise, it will not do anything to improve your bone health or help you deal with cancer. If anything, it could expose to a host of health issues.
